Smart Energies: a pan-European solar PV and BESS Independant Power Producer

Founded in 2012, Smart Energies (SET) has a solid track record in the development of small and mid-scale solar PV projects across Europe. With more than 300 MWp of capacity in operation or under construction, SET actively contributes to decarbonisation while minimising its land use impact, notably through the development of rooftop solar installations.
In 2024, the third vintage of the SWIFT fund and Plenium invested in SET’s capital, alongside existing shareholders RGreen and UGE. The capital raised finances new photovoltaic projects and supports the group’s growth strategy in France and internationally.

European leader in low land footprint solar PV

Smart Energies has established itself as one of the leaders in rooftop solar PV in France, before expanding its footprint to Italy and Greece from 2018 onwards.
Smart Energies develops, finances, builds and operates solar plants on rooftops, parking canopies and small brownfield sites. Its model is built on a strong conviction: producing renewable energy with high local acceptance, while minimising land use impact and creating tangible benefits in local communities for farmers and local authorities who make their rooftops available.
Having become a mission-driven company in 2023, Smart Energies now has more than 900 solar plants in construction or in operation, for a combined capacity of 300 MWp. The group is also developing a battery storage activity, positioning itself as a key player in electricity grid flexibility.

A diversification into electricity storage backed by SWIFT 3

With a team of 100 employees and the entry of SWEN Capital Partners and Plenium into its capital, SET is accelerating the deployment of its photovoltaic projects in France and internationally, the group’s core business.
This financial backing enables the company to consolidate its European expansion while exploring new growth drivers, notably battery electricity storage.
SET is developing battery projects ranging from 100 kW to 15 MW to meet the flexibility needs of grid operators and consumers. True to its DNA, SET favours low land footprint installations, with projects already under construction and development in France and Italy.
