Extracts chitosan from discarded crab shells to produce biodegradable solutions
Learn moreFounded in 2015 by CoFounder, a Norwegian startup studio, Optoscale has developed an underwater camera system powered by computer vision that measures fish weight and fish health in real time and with high accuracy, as well as analyses fish health and automatically counts sea lice to help farmers better manage their production while complying with regulation.
The adoption of precision aquaculture is estimated at about 12% of the salmon industry today and growing rapidly due to the clear and validated benefits it brings. In the long term, Optoscale will contribute to transform aquaculture across multiple species and provide a foundation for new farming methods including Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, submerged farming and offshore aquaculture. These farming methods have the potential to substitute wild fish capture at a larger scale than nearshore aquaculture and with lower environmental footprints.
Optoscale’s solution is key to precision aquaculture, addressing major sustainability issues: excess feeding, due to poor data, disease and mortality, leading to pollution (from excess feed going into the environment), and overfishing (from fishmeal and fish oil used in excess feed), disease transmission to wild populations and carbon footprint of farms. With real-time and accurate monitoring of fish weight, farmers can adjust the quantity of feed to what is actually needed, while fish health monitoring and sea lice detection allows them to treat diseases early and reduce the number of harmful sea lice treatments, leading to lower mortality.
